Hornet Softball Splits ODAC DH at Randolph-Macon
ASHLAND, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday at Randolph-Macon College, dropping the first game 8-5 and taking game two 9-4.
LC opened a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Nicole Riley, Danielle Powell and Mackenzie Chitwood hit three-straight singles to push across a run, and Logan Walker later hit a sacrifice fly. Skylar Dickens doubled in the second inning to make it a 3-0 game.
R-MC scored twice in the fourth, but LC answered with a tally in the top of the sixth. Riley hit a single to bring in Leslie Bourgeois. The Yellow Jackets sent six runners across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, Diane McDaniel delivered a three-run double and Madison Gilman jacked a two-run home run to take an 8-4 lead. Amy Bresson singled home another run for LC in the seventh.
Bresson finished 3-4 for LC with a double and Riley and Dickens each had two hits.
The Hornets broke out in the second inning the nightcap, scoring six runs. Powell had a three-run double in the inning and Brittany Coffey and Kayla St. John had RBI singles. R-MC countered with three in the third, with Gilman hitting another two-run home run. LC scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth to make the score 7-3.
After the Yellow Jackets scored in the bottom of the fourth, the Hornets added two insurance runs in the fifth on a two-run home run from Bourgeois.
Taylor Belknap earned her first collegiate win, tossing a complete game with five strikeouts. Bourgeois had three hits, while Riley, Powell, Coffey and Bresson each had two.
The Hornets finish the regular-season 24-16 and 12-6 in the ODAC, identical to the Yellow Jackets' conference mark. The teams will enter the conference tournament as the #3 and #4 seeds, with the exact pairings and tiebreakers to be released by the conference office Sunday.
