LC Softball Splits ODAC Tourney Opening Games

SALEM, VA – The fourth-seeded Lynchburg College softball team dropped its first game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Tournament Friday afternoon, falling 3-1 to #5 Roanoke College, but rallied to defeat #8 Emory & Henry College 9-1 in five innings. The eight-team tournament is a double elimination affair.

Roanoke took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a run-scoring double to left center from right fielder Katie Smith.  The Maroons tacked on another run in the third when Taylor Carter led off the frame with a single and stole second base.  Mattie Morris followed with a run scoring single to score Carter and give RC a 2-0 advantage.

Lynchburg cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third when Amy Bresson singled to left to lead off the inning and later scored on a passed ball.  Roanoke responded in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead on a sacrifice fly from Morris, scoring Smith who doubled earlier in the inning.

Emily Salsberry tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Maroons (19-20, 10-9), while Smith finished the day with three hits including two doubles.  Rachel Guilliams and Taylor Sutherland had two hits apiece in the victory.

Conner English went four innings in the circle for the Hornets, allowing just one earned run while striking out six. Bresson had two hits and a walk for Lynchburg in the opener.

The Hornets started strong in the elimination game with E&H, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Powell had an RBI double in the first, followed by a run-scoring single from Brittany Coffey. Lynchburg broke the game open with four runs in the second, aided by a pair of Wasp errors. Danielle Powell ripped a two-run double in the frame and Logan Walker sent a run home with a single.

Another error helped Lynchburg go ahead 7-1 in the fourth, and the Hornets loaded the bases in the fifth. Mackenzie Chitwood pushed a run across after a walk, and Walker ended the game with a single.

English worked four innings for the win, allowing just one hit.

The Hornets (25-17) will face #6 Guilford College Saturday at 10 a.m. in another elimination contest.
