LC Softball Earns Pair of Walk-Off Wins over William Peace

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team took both games of the doubleheader in walk-off fashion Sunday, defeating William Peace University 4-3 and 8-7.

The Hornets fell behind early in game one on back-to-back homeruns from Morgan Farmer and Heather McLean to give the Pacers a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.  Hornet third baseman Kayla St. John responded in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homer to left center to get Lynchburg on the board.

LC cut the deficit to one in the third inning on a two-out RBI double from Mackenzie Chitwood, scoring St. John.  After two scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, Hannah Coffey led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun to center to pull the Hornets even with the Pacers at three.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Chitwood lofted a game-winning single into left to score pinch runner Jessica Murphy from third to give the Hornets a 4-3 victory.  Conner English tossed 6.1 innings of scoreless relief for Lynchburg, while striking out nine to earn her eighth win of the season.

Lynchburg took game two 8-7.  The Hornets broke a 2-2 tie with four two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Skylar Dickens opened the frame with a single and moved up to second after a sac bunt from St. John.  Danielle Powell lined a single into right center to score Dickens, and came around to score on a single to right from Coffey.  Logan Walker provided the fifth Hornet hit of the inning with a two-run double to right center to give LC a 6-2 lead.

The Pacers pulled even with the Hornets in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single from Morgan Bryant followed by a sacrifice fly to right from Kacy Haithcock, setting up LC to provide more late-game heroics.  Chitwood led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left, and advanced to third on Walker's second double of the game.  Gabby Solomita lifted a fly ball to center for the walk-off sac fly, scoring pinch runner Taylor Belknap to give the Hornets the doubleheader sweep.

Walker had three hits and drove in three in the game two victory. Powell, Chitwood, Coffey and Nicole Riley each had two hits apiece for the Hornets.

Lyndsey Wiggins homered and drove in five in the nightcap for the Pacers (22-14).

Lynchburg (13-11, 4-2) travels to Ferrum College Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
