Powell, Chitwood Power Hornets to Extra Inning Win over R-MC
SALEM, VA – The fourth-seeded Lynchburg College softball team scored three runs in the 10th inning to defeat #3 Randolph-Macon College 7-5 in Game 12 of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Tournament. With the win, the Hornets advance to play against #2 Eastern Mennonite University Saturday night, with the winner moving on to the ODAC Championship Sunday against #1 Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Hornets took an early lead in the top of the first on a two-run double from Logan Walker to score Mackenzie Chitwood and Nicole Riley. The Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom half of the frame, as Diane McDaniel came across on a wild pitch and Sierra Ford produced an RBI single to center to even the score at two.
The two teams remained deadlocked at two through seven innings until Walker broke the tie in the first extra frame, delivering an RBI single to score
Danielle Powell to give the Hornets a 3-2 advantage. R-MC would even the score at three in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from Madison Gilman to score McDaniel. The Hornets and Yellow Jackets traded sacrifice flies in the ninth inning to make it a 4-4 game heading into the 10th inning.
Powell plated the fifth Lynchburg run with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring
Kayla St. John. With one out and one on in the inning, Chitwood delivered the decisive blow, a two-run home run to left giving the Hornets a commanding 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th.
The Yellow Jackets (31-13) cut the deficit to two in the home half on a run-scoring single to center from McDaniel, but
Conner English induced a game-ending groundout to third with the bases loaded to secure a 7-5 victory. English tossed 7.1 innings in relief, allowing just five hits while striking out two to earn her 18th win on the season. Riley had three hits and scored two runs, while Walker had two hits and drove in three in the contest.
Lynchburg (27-17) takes on Eastern Mennonite University tonight at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex tonight with the winner advancing to the ODAC Championship Tournament Finals.
