LC Softball Sweeps E&H, Extends Win Streak to 10
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Emory & Henry College Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, taking the first game 9-1 and the nightcap by a score of 11-5. Saturday's wins extend the Hornets' win streak to 10.
The Hornets took a commanding lead early in game one and did not look back the rest of way, tallying five runs in the bottom of the opening frame.
Kayla St. John was hit by a pitch to lead off the first and later scored on an RBI single to center from
Mackenzie Chitwood. Following a two-out walk to Hannah Coffey to load the bases with two outs, right fielder
Amy Bresson ripped a grand slam to give LC a 5-0 advantage at the end of one.
After tacking on a run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, second baseman
Leslie Bourgeois padded the Hornet lead with solo home run to left center, her second in as many games. Chitwood followed with a two-run homer to left in the sixth to extend the lead to eight.
Bourgeois, Chitwood and shortstop
Nicole Riley each had two hits for Lynchburg, and
Conner English earned the win in the circle, tossing four scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out 10.
The Hornets picked up where they left off in game one with six runs in the first inning of game two. St. John doubled to right center and advanced to third on a groundout.
Danielle Powell followed with a single to score St. John to get LC on the board. After an error to put runners on the corners,
Logan Walker doubled to score Powell - and Coffey and Bresson ripped consecutive singles to score two more. Bourgeois walked to load the bases with one out and
Skylar Dickens singled to left to bring home pinch runner
MacKenzie Mount for the fifth run of the frame. St. John followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give Lynchburg a 6-0 lead.
After E&H got on the board in the third with a two-run double from right fielder Erin Anderson, the Hornets responded in the bottom of the fourth on two-run home run from Chitwood, her second of the day.
The Wasps battled back with three runs in the fifth capped off by a two-run double from Hannah Bays to cut the deficit to one, but Bourgeois was able to get all three runs back with a three-run blast to left center, her third straight game with a long ball. English finished off her complete game effort in the circle by striking out the side in order in the seventh.
Chitwood finished 5-8 at the plate in the doubleheader, driving in a combined six runs. Powell had two hits and scored two runs in the game two effort for the Hornets. Anderson had two hits and drive in three for the Wasps (12-20, 5-7) in the nightcap.
Lynchburg (17-11, 6-2) looks to extend its winning streak Sunday, traveling to Guilford College in ODAC play for a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
