#8 Women's Soccer Shuts Out Randolph-Macon, 3-0

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Women's Soccer team recorded their sixth straight shutout Saturday afternoon after winning their ODAC opener against Randolph-Macon, 3-0.

Entering the game the Hornets boasted the 11th ranked-defense in the nation holding a .161 GAA (Goals Against Average) through six games and with today's result will most likely move into the Top 10. Averaging 9.83 points a game, good for 18th in the nation, the offense is having a spectacular season so far as well.

The momentum swung in Lynchburg's favor quickly in the first half but after multiple runs forward and the Yellow Jackets setting up shop in their own half, the forwards and midfielders were getting tired quickly and the latter part of the first half lacked any real threat on goal from either side even though the Hornets recorded 19 shots.

The ladies came out with a renewed energy and sense of urgency in the second half. After five minutes of play, the Hornets found the back of the net as senior Samantha Bagherpour provided freshman Alyssa Rudy with a magnificent through ball, which the first-year forward launched a shot into the upper right corner giving Lynchburg a 1-0 lead.

Half of the Hornets shots throughout the game were either just wide or were blocked, which was about the only bright spot for the Yellow Jackets as they could not break through the Lynchburg backline and after 90 minutes did not get off a single shot.

The second goal came as a result of a corner curled in by freshman Madalyn Amos with which junior Rachel Cooke headed into the lower right hand corner just past the outstretched arm of the Randolp-Macon goalkeeper.

Five minutes later a magnificent show of unselfish play and constant ball movement resulted in sophomore Brooke Kowalski finding freshman Marissa Inglisa who was able to find the back fo the net and record her first career goal.

The Hornets outshot the Yellow Jackets 45-0 and earned more corner kicks with the final tally at 9-1. Junior Hannah Olds fired 6 shots, Rudy and sophomore Caitlin Mertens both had 5 and Bagherpour, Cooke, and sophomore Kennedy Jakubek added 4 each as well. Senior goalkeeper Tess Frelick was never really called off her line and earned an easy victory Saturday, putting her 6-0-1 on the season.

With the clean sheet, the Hornets move to 6-0-1 on the year and 1-0 in the ODAC. The ladies return to the pitch when they travel to Hampton Roads for a matchup against Virginia Wesleyan this Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 pm.
