Field hockey drenched in ODAC final

Box Score

Lexington, Va. -- For the second time this season, the Lynchburg College field hockey team put forth a valiant effort on Washington and Lee's Turf Field.

And for the second time this season, that effort ended in overtime heartbreak.

Haley Tucker scored the golden goal in the third minute of sudden-death overtime play, crashing the baseline and finding the back of the cage to help the Generals to a rain-soaked 2-1 victory in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title game.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: No. 1 Washington and Lee 2, No. 2 Lynchburg 1 (OT)

Records: Washington and Lee 14-4, Lynchburg 16-4

Venue: W&L Turf Field, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- W&L assumed the lead in the 15th minute when Maggie Sands caged an unassisted goal.
- The Lynchburg defense kept the Hornets in the game in the first half with a trio of defensive saves. Kristina Geisler (Virginia Beach, Va.), Baylee Mueller (New Albany, Ohio), and Alexis Brown (Culpeper, Va.) all pulled balls off the line to keep the deficit at one.

- Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) tied the game in the 33rd minute, scoring unassisted after a period of sustained pressure finally paid off for the Hornets.

- Neither team was able to break through after halftime, however, as the soggy field conditions slowed play considerably. Lynchburg out-shot the generals 9-2 in the second 35 minutes.

- Lynchburg survived a penalty corner early in the overtime and got a pair of shots off on the other side, but the W&L defense held and regained possession, and that's when Tucker made the decisive run.

- Nikki Simpao (Stafford, Va.) , Karissa LeMaire (Rehoboth Beach, Del.), and Hannah Krause (Lewes, Del.) were named to represent Lynchburg on the All-Tournament Team.

LOOKING BACK

Lynchburg enjoyed one of the most prolific offensive seasons in program history in 2017. The team's 234 points are the fourth most in any season in program history, as are their 90 goals. Simpao continued one of the finest careers in LC lore with 70 points (seventh in the record book) and 16 assists (second-most all-time). Lerro's 28 goals led the conference and are the second-most by a freshman in Hornet history.
