Softball Sweeps Salisbury, Extends Winning Streak To Nine Games

Around the Horn

The Hornets swept the Seagulls and have scored 42 runs while posting a 6-0 record in the past three days, improving to 14-2 on the season.

Game 1 Breakdown

- Lynchburg got onto the scoreboard in the top of the 1st inning after sophomore Taylor Mabry singled to right field, bringing in junior Skylar Dickens

- Later in the 1st sophomore Brittany Coffey found the gap in left center, driving in Mabry and sophomore Mackenzie Chitwood

- Salisbury cut into the Hornets lead, getting one run across in the bottom of the 1st

- The pitchers dug in and both teams were held scoreless until the top of the 5th when Chitwood grounded out to the shortstop but senior Lauren Smith was able to break from third and score

- The Seagulls added another run in the bottom of the 5th to make it 4-2 in favor of the Hornets

- Freshman Kayla Hugate singled up the middle to score senior Logan Walker while fellow classmate Sarah Commons singled through the right side to score Coffey, pushing the Lynchburg lead to 6-2 in the top of the 6th

- Walker would score on a bases loaded walk in the top of the 7th and the Seagulls notched another run in the bottom half of the inning but the Hornets earned the victory, 7-3 in Game 1

Game 2 Breakdown

- The Hornets got a run across in the opening frame just like Game 1, as Mabry hit a single which brought home Hugate

- Salisbury would knot up the score at 1 as they registered a run of their own in the bottom half of the 1st

- The Hornets went back up the next inning as Smith doubled and advanced to third on throw, bringing in Commons and she would score on a wild pitch shortly after

- The top of the 3rd saw Lynchburg extend their lead to 6-1, with Dickens coming in to score and Commons singled down the right field line to score Walker and senior Kayla St. John

- Salisbury would one run in the bottom of the 3rd and 5th innings but could not come back and the Hornets won Game 2 to earn the sweep

On Deck

Lynchburg will return home and rest before they hit the road again for a tournament hosted by Emory University. The Hornets will take on Emory and Centre this weekend.
