Around the Horn

The Lynchburg Softball team split a doubleheader with their Hill City rival, the Randolph College Wild Cats, on Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets were able to snag the first game by outscoring their opponent in the third inning to claim the victory. Lynchburg fell in the second game after the Wild Cats exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning.

Game 1 Breakdown

- The Hornets and the Wild Cats went scoreless for the first two innings

- Randolph jumped on the board first with a home run in the third inning, this would be their only run of the game

- Lynchburg responded with a triple by junior Skylar Dickens, bringing senior Lauren Smith home to give the Hornets their first run

- With a single coming from sophomore Mackenzie Chitwood, Dickens rounded third to score the second Hornet run later in the inning

- With no responses from either team in the final innings, junior pitcher Conner English earned her eighth win of the season bygoing three up, three down in the final half inning of the game

Game 2 Breakdown

- Lynchburg struck first after Randolph made an error allowing Chitwood to make it to first, and opened the doors for Dickens and freshman Kayla Hugate to score

- The Hornets pitching kept Randolph quiet while the offense pushed across two more runs in the third inning following another error from the outfield, bringing in senior Logan Walker and Chitwood

- The Hornets tacked on another run, this time coming off a sacrifice fly ball to center field by Chitwood, allowing Hugate to tag up and score

- After being held down for five innings, Randolph exploded with seven runs in the top half of the fifth inning putting the score at 7-5

- Lynchburg got out of a jam at the top of the seventh with a double play on two Wild Cats who were set in scoring position but could not get any runs across in the bottom half

On Deck

The Hornets will be back on Moon Field, Saturday April, 15th, spotlighting the seniors for their Senior Day as well as Faculty/Staff Appreciation in a doubleheader with the #1 Virginia Wesleyan Marlins.
