Around the Horn
The Lynchburg Hornets split a doubleheader with the Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon. The doubleheader was focused on those who have served in the military and to recognize and applaud their dedication and service to the United States. The Yellow Jackets staged a late comeback to take Game 1 but the Hornets jumped out to an early lead in Game 2 and held off Randolph-Macon to snag Game 2.
Game 1 Breakdown
- Randolph Macon brought home 3 runs in the first inning to open the scoring
- Junior Skylar Dickens advanced to second base in the third inning, giving freshman Kayla Hugate and senior Jessica Murphy the chance to run home and shrink the deficit to 3-2
- In the same inning, senior Logan Walker singled out to right field, driving in Dickens from third to even the score 3-3.
- The Hornets pushed one more run across in the fourth inning on a wild pitch by the Yellow Jackets, putting the Hornets on top 4-3.
- The Yellow Jackets responded in the sixth inning after going through their lineup, scoring six runs to pull away from the Hornets 9-4.
- With no response form the Hornets in the bottom of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets snagged Game 1
Game 2 Breakdown
- In the first inning, Lynchburg stormed into lead with runs by Hugate, Dickens, and sophomore Mackenzie Chitwood, lighting up the board with a 3-0 lead.
- Both defenses locked down for the next four and half innings as no runs were scored from the second to top of the sixth.
- At the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Brittany Coffey took a pitch of the park, over the left field fence for a home run, putting the Hornets up 4-0
- Randolph Macon fought back after six quiet innings for two runs, one unearned in the top of the seventh before the Hornets closed the door for the victory.
On Deck
The Hornets will be back on Moon Field, Tuesday April 11th, for another edition of the Hill City Rivalary in a doubleheader starting at 3pm. Randolph College currently stands at 21-13 overall and 6-8 in ODAC.
