Volleyball drops a pair at Catholic's tri-match

Washington, D.C. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team battled tough competition Friday night, winding up with a 3-1 loss to 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport and a 3-2 defeat at the hands of host Catholic in our nation's capital.

Junior outside Sydney Frink (Chester, Va.) had a milestone evening for Lynchburg, collecting her 500th-career kill in a 25-kill, 19-dig evening.

 

THE RUNDOWN

Match 1 Final: No. 23 Christopher Newport 3, Lynchburg 1 (25-19. 25-16, 23-25, 25-16)

Match 2 Final: Catholic 3, Lynchburg 2 (14-25, 25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 15-12)

Records: Lynchburg 9-12, No. 23 Christopher Newport 18-3, Catholic 17-11

Venue: Franny Murray Court at the DuFour Center, Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Match 1

  • Christopher Newport hit a combined .293 over the first two sets to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

  • Lynchburg bounced back with a 25-23 win in the third, finished by a kill from junior middle Disa Haugsdahl (Warrenton, Va.). CNU reclaimed momentum and took the fourth, however, and the match.

  • Frink led the way for Lynchburg with 11 kills and four digs, logging her career 500th in the fourth and final set. Junior libero Lauren Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va.) dug out 21 Captains attacks.

Match 2

  • Lynchburg dominated the first set, hitting .235 in the chapter to cruise to a victory.

  • After Catholic rebounded with the next two sets, Lynchburg rallied to win the fourth behind a 6-0 run, powered by Stanford behind the service line.

  • Catholic took the final set, 15-12, after assuming an early lead.

  • Frink finished the match with 18 kills and 15 digs, while junior right side Lindsey Lang (Poquoson, Va.) contributed 12 kills and three blocks. Stanford tallied 25 digs, and junior setter Erin Farina (Crozet, Va.) made 27 assists; each had three aces.

 

LOOKING AHEAD

The Hornets will head into Fall Break before resuming their season Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Virginia Wesleyan.
