Hampden Sydney, Va. — They're back in the final.

Michael Lyons finished the fifth penalty kick attempt Friday evening, sending University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team into a frenzy and also past top-seeded Hampden-Sydney into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title match.

Lynchburg (9-4-6), the fourth seed in the tournament, will take on No. 2-seeded Washington and Lee in Saturday's 6 p.m. final at Hampden-Sydney College.

Friday, Lyons' PK was the fourth for the Hornets, who benefitted from a pair of penalty-kick saves by junior goalkeeper Kyle Gallagher, finally bringing closure to a match that ended in a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes.

H-SC (13-5-2) drew first blood when Spell Carr found Cole Burton for a 14th-minute goal. Lynchburg countered in the 18th minute when Lyons deflected Ben Mackey's shot at close range to tie the match.

Just before halftime, Carr scored unassisted to send the Tigers into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Lynchburg evened the match again shortly after intermission, when freshman Luke Mega collected a through-ball from senior Jack Ashby and beat the goalkeeper.

Both goalkeepers held fast from there. Tigers' keeper Ian Connor managed four of his seven saves in the second half, and Gallagher posted a pair of his own to keep the Tigers off the board after the break as well.

Neither team managed a shot-on-goal in either 10-minute overtime period, and so the teams turned to penalty kicks to decide the match.

Both Carr and Mackey made the first attempt, and Gallagher managed a save on the Tigers' next attempt. Ashby kept the pressure on with a finish, and Gallagher saved H-SC's following attempt to put the Hornets in the driver's seat.

Mega followed with another make for Lynchburg, but H-SC stayed alive with finishes by Cole Burton and Josh McCormack around a Hornets miss.

Then Lyons stepped to the spot and coolly made the clincher to send Lynchburg into the ODAC final for the third time in the past four seasons.

The Hornets' meeting with the Generals will be the third of the 2019 season. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in a non-conference meeting Sept. 25 in Lynchburg, and W&L won, 4-0, Oct. 16 in Lexington. Lynchburg is riding a six-match unbeaten streak since that result.
