HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
-
Coffey gave the Hornets an early 1-0 lead with a first-inning RBI single, but CNU struck back for four runs in the bottom of the first.
-
Lynchburg cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third on back-to-back solo home runs by senior first baseman Mackenzie Chitwood (Ferrum, Va.) and senior third baseman Taylor Mabry (Bassett, Va.). The Captains blew the game open in the bottom of the third with four more runs.
-
Wood's RBI triple in the fourth gave the Hornets their fourth run.
-
CNU's Kaitlyn Hasty put an early end to the game in the sixth with a three-run home run.
Game 2
-
After being set down in order through three innings, Hugate's single in the fourth gave the Hornets some life. Lynchburg threatened in the fifth and seventh but couldn't bring any runs across.
-
The Captains' three home runs were more than enough run support for pitcher Aubrey Bates, who twirled a four-hit shutout to earn the win.
