HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
-
With the score tied 1-1 after two innings, Cortland scored four times in the second to take a 5-1 lead. The Hornets took advantage of three Red Dragon fielding miscues to cut the deficit to one in the bottom half of the inning.
-
Chitwood's RBI single in the fifth tied the game at 5, but both teams' pitchers took over from there and there was no more scoring as the teams went into extras with that score.
-
Cox shut down Cortland again in the eighth, and Coffey delivered a bases-loaded single through the right side for the walk-off win.
Game 2
-
Lynchburg took control of Game 2 early on with five runs in the top of the first. Commons had the big blow, a two-run double.
-
Cortland's Hannah Feldman clubbed a three-run home run in the fourth to make it 5-3.
-
The Hornets added insurance in the top of the seventh, a four-run rally sparked by freshman pinch hitter Haley Drew's (Appomattox, Va.) double followed by a two-run single from Chitwood, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by freshman pinch hitter Olivia Herman (Westminster, Md.).
-
Sophomore right-hander Michelle Lehan (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned the win with four innings of three-run ball, and Cox earned the save with three perfect innings.
LOOKING AHEAD
Lynchburg will continue action at the Salisbury Invitational on Sunday, March 10, against The College of New Jersey at Salisbury University beginning at noon. Both teams received votes in the latest NFCA coaches' poll.
