Box Score 2 Salem, Va. -- The 19th-ranked University of Lynchburg softball team shook off a Game 1 defeat to pummel rival Roanoke in the nightcap Thursday evening in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.
Lynchburg took Game 2, 13-0 in 5 innings, after dropping the opener, 6-4.
Senior catcher Brittany Coffey (Manassas, Va.) led the way for the Hornet offense, going 6-for-7 with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1

Lynchburg scored on a first-inning Maroons error for an early 1-0 lead and doubled the advantage in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single off the bat of sophomore right fielder Kortney Leazer (Remington, Va.).

Roanoke rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish.

The Hornets added two runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run single from Coffey.
Game 2

A first-inning rally put Lynchburg in control of the nightcap early. Junior shortstop Kayla Hugate (Chesterfield, Va.) led off the game with a double and scored on senior first baseman Mackenzie Chitwood's (Ferrum, Va.) sacrifice fly. Hugate capped the seven-run inning with a two-run single.

Coffey homered to lead off the second, continuing the rout. Lynchburg added two more runs in the frame to lead 10-0 after two. Coffey slugged her second home run, another solo shot, in the fifth inning.

Senior right-hander Taylor Belknap (Arden, N.C.) completed the abbreviated shutout with five innings of two-hit ball. She struck out six Maroons in her eighth win of the season.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Hornets will move on in ODAC play Sunday, April 14 with a home doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite at 1 p.m. Lynchburg will honor its four seniors prior to first pitch in Game 1.
