HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Lynchburg took an early lead as Sandoval scored twice and senior midfiedler Kaleigh Ridgley (Reistertown, Md.) added another in the first nine minutes. Katie Clements brought the Maroons back with three straight goals of her own, and RC finished the first half on a 5-1 scoring run.
-
Roanoke increased the lead to 9-6 in the first few minutes of the second half, but the Hornets began to chip away. Trevisan scored all three of her goals between the 28-minute and 17-minute marks in the second half, the third of which cut the visitors' lead to 9-8. Whitten's free-position goal tied the game at 9 with 13:54 left to play.
-
The Maroons retook the lead on Clements' goal with 7:24 to go, but Lynchburg's defense kept the score that way until Sandoval was able to knot the score again at the 2:49 mark.
-
Whitten then put the Hornets ahead with 1:49 to play, and the Maroons turned it over in front of the Lynchburg goal, opening the door for the Hornets to run out the clock.
