Women's lacrosse comes from behind to top Maroons

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team erased a late deficit to claim its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the season, an 11-10 dispatching of archrival Roanoke.

Senior attackman Alicia Sandoval (Montclair, Va.) scored to tie the game at 10 with 2:49 remaining, and sophomore midfielder Maysn Whitten (Charlottesville, Va.) put Lynchburg ahead with a free-position goal with 1:49 remaining.

Sandoval scored a hat trick and notched an assist, while junior attackman Kelsi Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) also tallied a hat trick.

Junior goalie Emmy Yarmy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) kept the Hornets in the game with 11 saves, while junior defender Erin Gardner (Stewartsville, N.J.) picked up three draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls.

The victory put an end to Lynchburg's four-game losing skid.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 11, Roanoke 10

Records: Lynchburg (4-5, 1-1 ODAC), Roanoke (6-5, 1-2 ODAC)

Venue: Shellenberger Field, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg took an early lead as Sandoval scored twice and senior midfiedler Kaleigh Ridgley (Reistertown, Md.) added another in the first nine minutes. Katie Clements brought the Maroons back with three straight goals of her own, and RC finished the first half on a 5-1 scoring run.

  • Roanoke increased the lead to 9-6 in the first few minutes of the second half, but the Hornets began to chip away. Trevisan scored all three of her goals between the 28-minute and 17-minute marks in the second half, the third of which cut the visitors' lead to 9-8. Whitten's free-position goal tied the game at 9 with 13:54 left to play.

  • The Maroons retook the lead on Clements' goal with 7:24 to go, but Lynchburg's defense kept the score that way until Sandoval was able to knot the score again at the 2:49 mark.

  • Whitten then put the Hornets ahead with 1:49 to play, and the Maroons turned it over in front of the Lynchburg goal, opening the door for the Hornets to run out the clock.
