Lynchburg, Va. -- A furious comeback fell just short for the University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team in Wednesday' Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament first-round matchup with Shenandoah as the host Hornets fell, 12-11, to end their season.

Fourth-seeded Lynchburg trailed 12-8 with 3:40 remaining the contest before rallying to cut the score to a single goal with 26 seconds to go. Lynchburg won the draw and got a shot off in the waning seconds, but Shenandoah's defense held and the fifth-seeded visitors escaped Shellenberger Field with the win.

Junior attackman Kelsi Trevisan (West Chester, Pa.) scored three goals to go with an assist to lead the Lynchburg offense. Junior attackman Danielle Hook (Alexandria, Va.) scored twice, both in the final 2 minutes, won three draw controls and picked up three ground balls.

Senior attackman Kelsey Nock (Salisbury, Md.) added two goals, and senior attackman Alicia Sandoval (Montclair, Va.) chipped in a goal and four assists.

Junior goalie Emmy Yarmy (New Rochelle, N.Y.) matched a career-high with 15 saves.

The two teams traded goals in the early going until Lynchburg closed the first half strong. Sandoval gave the host Hornets their first lead, 5-4, with 13:30 left in the opening period, and Lynchburg finished the half on a 4-1 run to lead 7-5 at the break.

The early going in the second half was all Shenandoah, as the visitors scored six unanswered goals in the first 18 minutes of play.

Lynchburg got back on the board with 6:51 left, when Sandoval found junior attackman Carly Sandler (Kennebunk, Maine) for a goal, cutting the score to 11-8.

After another SU score, Nock scored with 2:44 on the clock, again assisted by Sandoval, to cut the lead to three. Hook scored twice in the final 2 minutes to bring the tally to its final standing.

Shenandoah, the No. 5 seed in the ODAC tournament, moves on to face top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Washington and Lee in Saturday's semifinal round.

Lynchburg finishes the 2019 season with a 9-8 record for the third-straight season. The Hornets have been above .500 each of the past five campaigns.
