Box Score 2 Greensboro, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team dropped close decisions twice Sunday as Greensboro College swept the Hornets by 4-3 scores in both contests at Greensboro's Latham Park.
Third baseman Jordyne Vance caught fire at the plate for 12th-ranked Lynchburg, going 5-for-7 with a triple and an RBI on the day. Morgan Mitchell contributed four RBI, three of them on a pinch-hit home run in the opener, but it wasn't enough to get the Hornets (3-3) in the win column.
After a scoreless first three innings, Lynchburg found itself in a 4-0 hole in the fourth inning. Greensboro (4-2) took the lead on Jordan Deaton's RBI single with one out and then earned some breathing room when Olivia Davidson delivered a three-run double with two outs.
The Hornets finally rallied in the top of the seventh, sparked by back-to-back two-out walks issued to Kayla Hugate and Sarah Commons. Mitchell then delivered a pinch-hit, three-run home to left that cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Pride forced a popout that ended the ballgame.
In the nightcap, Lynchburg took an early 1-0 lead when Vance's infield single scored Hugate, who led off the game with a single.
The Hornets doubled the lead in the top of the second, taking advantage of Gracie Dooley's leadoff single. Dooley later scored on an RBI single by Commons.
GC got a run back in the bottom half, and the score remained 2-1 in Lynchburg's favor until the seventh, when Vance slugged a one-out triple past the diving right fielder. She scored the insurance run on Mitchell's sacrifice fly, and the Hornets carried a 3-1 advantage into the final frame.
Greensboro's comeback started when Kirsten Doss led off the bottom half with a double, followed by a Cassie Collins single. GC cut the lead to 3-2 on Caroline Stanley's RBI groundout. After another groundout created the second out of the inning, a Hornets throwing error allowed Collins to come around, tying the ballgame at three.
Kailey Walker followed with a two-out triple, and Walker scored the winning run on a pinch-hit knock by Hannah King that cemented the sweep.
The Hornets will hit the road again next weekend for the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Apex, N.C. Lynchburg will take on No. 2 Emory University, North Carolina Wesleyan, Kean, and Piedmont over the weekend tournament.
