Box Score 2 Salisbury, Md. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team's up-and-down season continued Sunday afternoon as the Hornets suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of SUNY Cortland, 9-3 and 2-1.
It was the second day of competition for the Hornets at Salisbury University's Optimist Club of Salisbury Sea Gull Classic.
Lynchburg (8-6) found itself down early as Cortland pushed a run across in the top of the second inning in Game 1. Haylee Wood knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, but Cortland broke the game open with four runs in the third and another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Run-scoring hits by Carol Oberhelman and Sophie Tully cut the Red Dragons' lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but Cortland (2-2) added insurance in the final two frames to seal the victory.
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap when Wood reached on a Cortland error, scoring Jordyne Vance, but the Red Dragons tied the score in the third against Hornets starter Angela Sperandeo.
The freshman dodged a threat in the fifth, but Cortland broke through for another run in the sixth with three consecutive hits to lead off the inning.
Sperandeo retired the next three Red Dragons hitters, and Lynchburg mounted a rally with two baserunners in the seventh, but a double-play ball ended the game with the tying run stranded on base.
Lynchburg will wrap up its Spring Break tournament Monday with a doubleheader against No. 16-ranked Salisbury starting at noon.
