Box Score 2 Salisbury, Md. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team's losing streak fell to four games Monday as the Hornets were swept by No. 16 Salisbury, 2-0 and 10-1, in the finale of the Optimist Club of Salisbury Sea Gull Classic.
Lynchburg (8-8) got three hits on the day from both Kortney Leazer and Sarah Commons, but Sea Gull pitching held the Hornets offense at bay, stranding 15 runners on base.
Savannah Sheats scattered five hits and struck out five in Monday's opener, twirling a complete-game shutout. Commons and Leazer both went 2-for-3 for Lynchburg.
Salisbury (17-3) leapt out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning of the nightcap and never looked back.
Lynchburg finally got on the board in the sixth as Leazer doubled home Cortney Rawes to cut the deficit to 7-1, but SU's Maddison Lednum slugged a three-run home run in the sixth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule and end the game after six innings.
The Hornets posted a 2-4 record at the annual Salisbury tournament, sweeping No. 10 TCNJ in Saturday's opening doubleheader.
Lynchburg will take off for Spring Break before returning to action Saturday, March 14 with a non-conference doubleheader at Mary Washington starting at 1 p.m.
