Box Score 2 Asheboro, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team split a slugfest of a doubleheader with Greensboro College Saturday afternoon, as the Hornets came away with a 10-5 win in Game 1 but came up short in Game 2, falling 10-9.
In game one the Hornets (1-1) went down 1-0 early in the first inning after the Pride (1-1) scored an unearned run, but Lynchburg quickly tied the game in the second on a Holden Fiedler RBI-single to left field that scored Carrson Atkins and tied the game at 1-1. Lynchburg went up 5-1 in the fifth inning after an Atkins double scored Avery Combs and Avery Neaves but Greensboro clawed back and tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, after junior Cameron Lane led off the inning with a walk, junior Garrett Jackson homered to left field to put the Hornets up 7-5. One batter later, Neaves hit a no-doubter over the left field wall to put Lynchburg up 8-5. Junior Jackson Harding and Fiedler each drove in a run as the Hornets put up five unanswered runs on their way to a 10-5 win.
The Hornets recieved strong pitching out of the bullpen from seniors Adam Dofflemyer and Grayson Thurman, as the two seniors combined for the final five frames of the game. Thurman struck out seven in his three innings of work to earn his first win on the younng campaign.
Five Hornets had two RBI and five had a multi-hit game as Fiedler led the way going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
In game two, Lynchburg fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but Neaves tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second with a solo home run to right field, his second on the day. The Hornets fell behind again in the bottom half of the second and trailed up until the fifth inning when junior PJ Alvanos drove in two runs on a bases loaded single to left field, putting Lynchburg up 5-4.
The Pride regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth after a Chance Bryant two-RBI single, putting Greensboro up 8-6. The Pride scored two more times to go up 10-6 and although the Hornets scored in three of the final four innings, Lynchburg could not overcome the deficit.
Lynchburg used eight pitchers in the second game and the offense combined for 10 hits as Combs led the way going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
University of Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Sunday, February 21 with the rubber match of the three game series against the Pride with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Greensboro's Ted Leonard Park.
