Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team suffered a season-opening sweep at the hands of Greensboro College Saturday afternoon on Moon Field, falling 7-0 and 9-3 to the visiting Pride.

Shortstop Kayla Hugate led the Hornets (0-2) with three hits, two of them doubles, while newcomers Karle Cundiff and Emily Charlton both drove in runs for Lynchburg.

The Hornets couldn't figure out GC starter Cheyanne Cox in the opener. The junior right-hander struck out nine and scattered four hits to earn the shutout and the victory.

Two of Lynchburg's four hits were doubles off Hugate's bat.

In the nightcap, Lynchburg again found itself down early, trailing 2-0 after an inning and 3-0 headed into the bottom of the third. The Hornet bats finally awoke when Lexi Powell stroked a leadoff double, and Cundiff doubled again two batters later to bring home Lynchburg's first run of the season.

The Hornets added a single run on Charlton's pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the fifth, but GC (2-2) broke the game open late with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Lynchburg scored again late on a seventh-inning Greensboro error.

Lynchburg will look to get in the win column Saturday, February 27 when Mary Baldwin pays a visit to Moon Field for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
