Baseball falls twice to William Peace

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Cary, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to William Peace Saturday afternoon as the Pacers topped the Hornets 7-0 in Game 1 and then won in walk-off fashion, 4-3, in Game 2.

The Hornets (2-4) mustered only three baserunners in the opener. Junior Cameron Lane reached on a Pacers' throwing error in the first, but that was Lynchburg's only traffic for the first seven innings of the game. Senior Avery Combs led off the eighth inning with a single through the right side, breaking up Pacers starter Sam Peddycord's no-hit bid. Later in the inning, Carrson Atkins reached on a fielder's choice and Holden Fiedler singled up the middle to put two men on base for the Hornets, but Lynchburg couldn't get the men home.

Junior Brandon Pond turned in a quality start -- six innings, two runs, six hits, six strikeouts -- but did not receive any run support. William Peace broke the game open with five runs in the eighth against the Hornet bullpen.

In Game 2, the Lynchburg offense did not wait to get men on base as graduate student Kinston Carson singled to left to lead off the game. In the top of the third, Combs singled to center and then advanced to second on a Pacers' balk. Two batters later, sophomore Avery Neaves singled up the middle to drove in Combs, breaking up a scoreless tie.

In the fourth, the Pacers (5-1) tied the game with an RBI single from Logan Barbour and then took a 2-1 lead after a Tyler Vaughn triple to right field. Then in the sixth, the Hornets retook the lead with two runs of their own as freshman Riley O'Donovan scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Ryan Long and Atkins scored on Carson's RBI single.

After two perfect relief innings from Grayson Thurman, the William Peace hitters figured out the righty and scored twice in the bottom half of the ninth to win 4-3.

The Hornets received a strong outing from its sophomore starter Zack Potts as the righty went 5 2⁄3 innings with two runs on just five hits and struck out nine.

Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Tuesday, March 2 as the Hornets travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on Methodist University in a non-conference double-header. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
