Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team brought their bats to life Wednesday afternoon on Moon Field, sweeping Mary Baldwin in a midweek doubleheader by 9-3 and 10-2 scores. Lynchburg's win streak extended to six games with the victories
The Hornets fell behind early in the opener, but sophomore first baseman Caroline Joy rapped a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning that put Lynchburg ahead for good.
An inning later, freshman right fielder Lexi Powell clubbed an RBI double that freshman designated player Bri Hodges followed with an RBI single to open the gap to 6-2. The Hornets scored thrice more in the sixth inning, highlighted by Powell's RBI single.
Senior right-hander Michelle Lehan was in control in the circle for Lynchburg, scattering three hits across six innings and striking out six Fighting Squirrels to earn her first win of 2021. She allowed just one earned run.
Lynchburg wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap. MBU walked the bases loaded before freshman left fielder Kaleigh Hackett hit a fly ball down the left-field line that was misplayed, clearing the bases for an early 3-0 lead. The Hornets added four more runs in the second, highlighted by a three-run double from Joy.
The Hornets made use of three Mary Baldwin errors in the fifth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule and polish off the sweep.
Freshman right-hander Bre Carter earned her first collegiate win in the circle, tossing three shutout innings in relief.
Lynchburg (6-2) will now gear up for a big weekend at the annual Salisbury University tournament, where they will match up with the host at No. 5-ranked Sea Gulls, as well as Washington College, Rowan, and Wesley.
