Box Score 1 Salisbury, Md. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team played to a doubleheader split with Washington College and Rowan University Saturday in the opening day of the Salisbury University Tournament.
The Hornets began the day with a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Shorewomen, stranding the tying run at third in the deciding seventh inning, before turning in their best effort of the year in a 3-0 win over Rowan in Saturday's nightcap.
Freshman right-hander Hailey Farlow totaled 9 ⅓ innings of scoreless ball in the circle for Lynchburg, using the momentum from 2 ⅓ relief innings in the opener to throw a complete game Saturday afternoon. She allowed just three hits and struck out five in the Lynchburg victory.
In Saturday's opener, Washington drew first blood in the fifth, making use of a leadoff error and a single to start the rally. Later in the inning, the Shorewomen got a two-run single from Megan robbins and another RBI hit by Rachel DiMarcello to take a 4-0 lead.
Lynchburg cut the lead on Lexi Powell's sacrifice fly in the sixth and a seventh-inning sac fly from Karle Cundiff, also makung use of an RC error in the frame, but the Horents weren't able to push the tying run across.
In the nightcap, sophomore second baseman Ashley Hailey continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs for the Hornets. In the third, Hailey stroked a two-out singles and scored on Cundiff's second at bat of the game. In the sixth, she reached via a bunt single and scored on Gracie Dooley's hit bunt single after to help the Hornets move to 7-3 in 2021.
Lynchburg will continue play at the Salisbury Tournament Sunday, taking on the No. 5-ranked Sea Gulls and Wesley.
