Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. -- Graduate student Nicki Santora made the last of her five goals count, scoring with 1:53 left in the second overtime to lift University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 13-12 win over No. 14 Mary Washington on the road Saturday.
Santora took the feed from fellow grad student Carly Sandler and penetrated the Eagle defense to score, ending the deadlock with the golden goal.
It was the last of five goals for the Tewksbury, Mass., native, who also tied the game with a man-down goal with just 22 seconds left in regulation to send the game to OT.
Senior Leah Dumas added four goals and one assist, and graduate student Kelsi Trevisan chipped in two goals and two assists for Lynchburg (3-1).
The Hornets jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but UMW rallied with four straight to head into halftime with a 5-4 advantage.
After the break, the teams traded goals until Mary Washington rattled off a 4-0 run to lead 12-8 and seemingly had control of the game with 12:47 left to play.
Both defenses buckled down until Trevisan made use of a Sandler assist to score with 7:55 remaining, sparking four unanswered goals for the Hornets at the end of regulation.
Neither team was able to put a shot on frame in overtime before Santora's strike from the left elbow found the back of the net, ending the game.
Sophomore goalie Julia Broughton made six saves for the Hornets.
The Lynchburg defense was fantastic, denying goals on all six of Mary Washington's free-position attempts. Freshman Tori King collected a game-high five draw controls, while junior Madison Knight picked up a game-best seven ground balls.
The Hornets win ended a 13-game losing streak to their in-state rivals, one that dated back to 1993.
Lynchburg will return to play at Christopher Newport with a non-confernece game set for 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 24.
