Box Score 2 Salisbury, Md. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team split a pair of games on the road Sunday, falling 6-0 to No. 5 Salisbury before run-ruling Wesley, 9-1 in five innings, in the team's nightcap.
Freshman Addison Walter led the Hornets with three hits on the day, driving in two runs and scoring one.
Lynchburg started the day with a pitcher's duel between senior right-hander Kayley Cox and the Sea Gulls' Lindsey Windsor. The teams were scoreless with just one baserunner apiece through three innings, but SU got to Cox and reliever Emily Charlton in the fourth, scoring six runs on seven consecutive hits to break the ballgame open.
Lynchburg threatened to retaliate in the fifth after Walter led off the frame with a double, but she was stranded there, and the Hornets didn't manage another baserunner.
The late game with Wesley was a different story. Lynchburg fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first, but the Hornets scored thrice in the bottom half -- two of them on Walter's RBI single -- and never looked back.
Kayla Hugate successfully executed a squeeze play in the second to add to the Lynchburg lead, and the Hornets rallied again in the third to the tune of a five-run inning. Walter started the offense with a one-out single and came in to score on Bri Hodges' RBI knock. Two batters later, sophomore Ashley Hailey delivered a run-scoring single, followed by Hugate's RBI groundout and a two-run single off the bat of Lexi Powell.
Freshman right-hander Hailey Farlow tossed 2 ⅔ innings of scoreless ball, striking out four to earn the win in relief.
Lynchburg (8-4) will stay in Maryland for a Monday doubleheader with Salisbury. Game 1 is set for an 11 a.m. start.
