Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team defeated Washington and Lee University, 3-2 in overtime, Tuesday night as freshman Aaryn Boatwright scored the game-winner for the Hornets.
At the end of regulation, the Hornets and the Generals were tied at 2-2 and headed into overtime. In the 61st minute of the game, Emma Strouse inserted a penalty corner and off of it, Jackie Lerro took a shot, but was blocked by a W&L defender. Off the defelction, Boatwright finished the play and found the back of the Generals' cage to give the Hornets the win.
Lynchburg (3-0, 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) started the scoring early after Lerro scored off an assist from freshman Brooke Hyland to put the Hornets up 1-0 in the eighth minute. Three minutes later, Lynchburg took a 2-0 lead after Hyland scored a goal of her own on an assist from senior Maggie Chiappazzi.
Neither team scored in the second quarter, but the Generals came out hot in the third as W&L responded with two goals of its own. At the 35th minute, Peyton Tysinger scored off a double assist from Kailey Fitzgerald and Grace Amaden. Then in the 40th minute, Freddie Tobeason tied the game with an unassisted goal, but it was the Hornets that came away victorious in overtime.
The Hornets and the Generals (2-1, 2-1) each had 10 shots in the game with W&L having eight on frame; just one more than Lynchburg's seven. W&L's goalkeeper made four saves while Lynchburg's Laurel Nicks saved six Generals' shots on night.
Lynchburg field hockey will be back in action on Friday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. as the Hornets travel to Ashland to take on Randolph-Macon in another ODAC matchup.
