Box Score 2 Lexington, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team swept Washington and Lee University on the road Saturday afternoon as the Hornets defeated the Generals 15-7 in Game 1 and 19-6 in Game 2 of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader.
In Game 1, the Hornets (10-7, 3-1 ODAC) got out to an early 1-0 lead after a Garrett Jackson RBI-single brought Holden Fiedler around to score. The Generals responded in the bottom half of the fourth with four runs of their own to take a 4-1 lead.
In the top half of the sixth, Jackson parked one over the left field wall for a two-run home run after Dylan Fisher led off the inning with a walk. Lynchburg batted around and brought six men around to score, five coming from walks. Jackson's home run was the only Lynchburg hit of the inning as the junior led the offense, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
The Hornets went on to score eight more runs over the final three frames with six more again in the seventh. Gavin Collins delivered an RBI single, and then Ryan Long drove home two with a double in the left-center field gap, securing the Hornets' 15-7 victory.
Kinston Carson got the start for the Hornets, as the graduate student went 3 ⅓ innings and allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out four. Zack Potts came out of the Hornets' bullpen and threw four gritty innings as the sophomore allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out five to earn his third win of the campaign.
In Game 2, the Hornets scored first again after an RBI single from Collins brought Avery Neaves around. Two batters later, Long had his second two-RBI knock of the day, scoring Collins and Avery Combs to put the Hornets up 3-0.
The Generals responded with a run in the bottom half of the third, but Lynchburg scored three more in the top half of the fourth. Neaves hit a two-run home run, and Chris Martin singled up the middle to score Combs to put Lynchburg in front, 6-1.
In the fourth, the Hornets batted around and scored 11 runs on only three hits as Neaves drove home another with an RBI single, and Cameron Lane drove in two more with a single to right. The Hornets went up 17-1.
In the home half of the seventh, the Generals scored five runs on three hits but it was not enough as Lynchburg scored twice more in the top of the ninth.
The Hornets' 19 runs were a season-high as the offense pounded out 13 hits and walked 11 times.
Lynchburg received a strong start from Brandon Pond as the junior went five innings and only allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Wednesday, March 23 as the Hornets travel to Ashland to face No. 12 Randolph-Macon. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
