Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's soccer team saw its nine-match Old Dominion Athletic Conference unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Hampden-Sydney on Shellenberger Field.
Tigers freshman Declan Shaw split a pair of defenders and finished with a strong kick on the outside of his foot to put the visitors ahead in the 47th minute.
Lynchburg controlled nearly the entirety of the match. The Hornets took 15 shots to H-SC's four and hit the crossbar on two occasions but could never get past Tigers keeper Gray Sutter, who made three saves to earn the shutout.
Lynchburg's first strong chance came in the 21st minute following a Tigers foul. Junior Joey Daly's ball found its way above sophomore Kenny Robles' head, and the Lynchburg midfielder attempted a bicycle-kick style shot that was blocked by the H-SC defense. After falling to the ground, the ball came back to Robles, and from his side he launched a shot that got past Sutter but hit the top of the crossbar.
In the second half, now trailing, Lynchburg senior Ben Mackey launched a rocket that also clipped the crossbar. The play resulted in a corner kick, but no more came of the threat, and the Tigers held on for victory.
The loss also ended the Hornets' home unbeaten run of nine.
Lynchburg (4-2-1, 4-1-1 ODAC) will wait a week to play again, when they will hit the road Sunday, March 28 for Randolph-Macon for a 5 p.m. first kick.
