Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team played to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader split with No. 23 Randolph-Macon Wednesday on Moon Field. The Hornets dropped the opener, 3-0, before winning the nightcap, 7-1, behind a complete-game two-hitter from senior Michelle Lehan.
Lynchburg (9-7, 1-1 ODAC) fell behind early in Game 1 when Ali Celiberti doubled home a first-inning run for the Yellow Jackets. R-MC added a pair more runs in the second and wouldn't need any more as Madie Rhoads held the Hornets scoreless with just two hits.
Lynchburg did muster an opportunity in the fifth. Center fielder Gracie Dooley knocked a one-out double, and the Hornets loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and a walk, but Rhoads induced a pair of popouts to neutralize the threat.
Senior right-hander Kayley Cox was solid in relief for Lynchburg, going 5 ⅓ innings and allowing just one run on four hits. She retired the last eight hitters of the ballgame in order.
In Game 2, the Hornets wasted no time rallying. Right fielder Lexi Powell reached on an error to lead off the ballgame, and shortstop Kayla Hugate doubled with one out to put baserunners on second and third, and Powell came home on another Yellow Jackets error for a 1-0 lead.
Randolph-Macon (3-2-1, 1-1) answered in the third, when Maddie Stone drilled an RBI single. It was the last hit the Yellow Jackets would muster.
Meanwhile, Lynchburg answered in the bottom half. Powell led off the inning with a walk, and back-to-back singles by Ashley Hailey and Hugate loaded the bases with Hornets. After a fielder's choice, Cundiff delivered a two-run double to put the Hornets in front. Catcher Olivia Herman followed with a two-run single, and the junior later came home on a wild pitch for Lynchburg's fifth run of the inning.
The Hornets added another in the fourth on Shea Alheit's pinch-hit RBI single to make the score 7-1 in the hosts' favor.
Lehan struck out the final six hitters she faced to earn her second victory of the season. She struck out eight on the day, and the run she allowed was unearned.
The six-run margin was Lynchburg's largest in a win over the Yellow Jackets since the 2014 season.
Lynchburg will hit the road for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, starting Saturday with an ODAC twinbill against Shenandoah at 1 p.m.
