Box Score 2 Winchester, Va. -- Karle Cundiff and Lexi Powell combined for nine hits, Hornet pitching allowed just two runs, and University of Lynchburg's softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah Saturday afternoon with 2-1 and 6-1 victories.
In Game 1 of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference double-dip, both Lynchburg's Michelle Lehan and SU's Megan Scalley dodged trouble through the first few innings, but the Hornets finally got to Scalley in the fourth. Ashley Hailey led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a fielder's choice that allowed Bri Hodges to reach base as well. Then, with two out, Powell smoked a triple to left field to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead.
Lehan continued to be effectively wild, pairing her six strikeouts with six walks on the day, until the seventh, when a leadoff walk, a single, and a couple of wild pitches allowed Shenandoah on the board. Kayley Cox came in to slam the door, and the senior right-hander did, getting a groundout and strikeout to earn her first save of the season.
Lynchburg's bats were more alive in the nightcap. The Hornets got ahead early when Kayla Hugate walked, stole second, and came around to score on a Cundiff single.
An inning later, the Hornets made it a 3-0 lead when two runs came home on a Powell infield hit and ensuing throwing error.
SU cut the gap to 3-1 in the third, but Lynchburg earned some breathing room in the seventh with three runs, one on a Madison Walker sacrifice fly and two more on a Cundiff single.
Cox earned the win in Game 2 with 4 ⅓ strong innings, and left-hander Emily Charlton closed the game out for the save, striking out two in 2 ⅔.
Lynchburg (11-7, 3-1 ODAC) is set to stay on the road Sunday with a noon non-conference doubleheader at Mary Washington.
