Box Score 2 Ferrum, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's volleyball team split a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference matches Saturday, winning in straight sets over tri-match host Ferrum before falling to Virginia Wesleyan in a five-set thriller.
The Hornet freshmen led Lynchburg in the early match of the day, a 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 shellacking of the Panthers. Freshman outside Paige O'Donnell matched her season-high with 11 kills on just 18 attack attempts, and she also collected eight digs, and freshman middles Princess Salifou and Alexis Horner combined for 11 kills.
Lynchburg's service was fantastic as the Hornets tallied seven aces in the match. Three of those came from junior Khoury May, who also made 30 assists, two blocks, and five digs.
The day's second match became a marathon as the Hornets rallied for some great play but couldn't string sets together. Virginia Wesleyan won the match by a 25-15, 23-25, 25-10, 25-27, 15-4 score.
Abbi Leeper had 13 kills and 19 digs, Emma Drake collected 10 kills and two blocks, and May had a double-double with 28 assists and 15 digs in the losing effort.
The ODAC loss was the first for the Hornets (5-3, 4-1) this season and first under head coach Hannah Givens, snapping a five-match conference win streak for Lynchburg.
The Hornets will take a break from conference play this week with a Wednesday trip to Southern Virginia for a 7 p.m. match.
