Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- In its first game in over 15 months, University of Lynchburg's field hockey team topped Shenandoah University, 3-1, on the Hornets' own Shellenberger Field in a Friday night lights game between Old Dominion Athletic Conference powers.
The Hornets (1-0, 1-0) came out strong in the early going, and at the 8:32 mark in the first quarter, junior Brittany Claybaugh scored off an assist from senior Emily Dudley to put the Hornets up 1-0.
In the second quarter, Shenandoah created early scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the cage until Kelsey Jones snuck one past Lynchburg goalkeeper Laurel Nicks on a penalty stroke to tie the game at the half.
Lynchburg responded in the third at the 37:27 mark when senior Emily Dudley scored the game winning goal as she put it past the Shenandoah goalkeeper off a penalty corner insert from fellow senior Emma Strouse to give Lynchburg a 2-1 advantage. Then, in the middle of the fourth quarter, senior Taylor Green connected on a goal off of another Strouse penalty corner to seal the win for the Hornets.
Lynchburg out-shot Shenandoah 17-7 on the night with 10 of those strikes on frame. Nicks earned her first win of the year and recorded three saves on the night.
University of Lynchburg field hockey will be back in action on Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. as the Hornets remain at home to take on the Bridgewater College Eagles in another ODAC matchup.
