Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Bolstered by a second-half run, University of Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team pulled away for a 17-13 victory over visiting Meredith Saturday afternoon on Shellenberger Field.
Kelsi Trevisan scored five goals for the Hornets (2-0), while fellow attackman Carly Sandler contributed a hat trick and an assist.
Lynchburg jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind two goals from Trevisan and a third by Tori King. Meredith rallied back to tie the game at 6-6, but goals by Trevisan and Karlie Hughes late in the first sent the Hornets into the half with an 8-7 advantage.
Leading 11-9 about 10 minutes into the second half, Lynchburg ripped off six unanswered goals to break the game open. Hughes' second goal of the game with 11:46 to go capped off the run, and the Avenging Angels' defense held Lynchburg scoreless the rest of the way.
The comeback attempt fell short, however, as Meredith managed just four goals in the waning minutes.
Erin Gardner registered 12 draw controls for the Hornets and caused a pair of turnovers to lead the Lynchburg defense.
Lynchburg's women's lacrosse team will be back in action Wednesday, March 10 at St. Mary's (Md.) for a 4 p.m. first draw.
