Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Ferrum on Saturday afternoon by finals of 9-4 in Game 1 and 17-3 in Game 2.
In the opener, the Panthers (1-4) struck first with a pair of runs in the opening frame. The Hornets (4-6) cut the deficit in half in the second inning with a lead-off triple by Avery Neaves, who later scored on a groundout.
The Hornets scored seven runs across the next two frames to take an 8-1 lead, capped off by an opposite-field home run from Garrett Jackson. Ferrum plated single runs in the fifth and seventh innings but fell short, 9-4.
Kinston Carson drove in three runs, while Neaves finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Carson started the game on the mound and tossed three innings with four strikeouts before Zack Potts (1-0) threw five of the final six frames to earn his first win of the season. Potts allowed three hits and two runs, but none earned, and had nine strikeouts. Hornet pitching combined for 15 punch outs in the game. Will Davis (0-1) was strapped with the loss for the Panthers after he went four innings and allowed eight runs with three walks and four strikeouts.
In Game 2, the Hornets scored five runs in each of the first two frames to open up a 10-0 lead, including a three-run home run by Neaves to open the scoring. Neaves ignited another five-run inning in the sixth with a three-run double down the right field line to put the Hornets up 17-3 before the game was called after the top half of the eighth inning.
Neaves finished the day 6-for-7 with eight RBI across the two games and also scored five runs.
Brandon Pond (1-2) notched his first victory of the season with six innings of work. He yielded three runs on six hits and struck out seven batters. Travis Shumate tossed an inning of relief before Joseph Hurowitz struck out two and retired the side in the eighth in his first collegiate appearance.
Carlton Redd (1-1) saw just 2⁄3 of an inning on the bump, giving up five runs with three walks. The Panthers used a total of seven pitchers in the loss.
The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, March 9, against William Peace for a single game at Fox Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
