Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Averett at home Sunday afternoon, taking both games from visiting Averett by 3-2 scores.
The Hornets took an early lead in the opener when Kayla Hugate tripled in the first inning and came around to score on a Cougars fielding error.
Averett tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth and took the lead on another in the fifth, but Lynchburg responded in the bottom half when Addison Walter led off the frame with an infield single and Hugate doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Lexi Powell and Olivia Herman gave Lynchburg the lead, and the Hornets never looked back.
Senior right-hander Kayley Cox went the distance to claim her second win of 2021, allowing just five hits and striking out two.
In the nightcap, Averett again took an early lead, taking advantage of a Hornets error to score in the top of the first. Lynchburg tied the game on a Bri Hodges RBI single in the second, but the Cougars reassumed the lead on a solo home run in the third.
Lynchburg threatened in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings but couldn't break through again until the bottom of the seventh. Walter led off the inning with a single and moved up on Hodges' second hit of the ballgame. Jordan Brown then delivered a game-tying single to center, and Powell's one-out RBI single plated Hodges as the Hornets walked off with victory.
Lynchburg (4-2) will return to action at home on Moon Field Wednesday, March 10 with a doubleheader against Mary Baldwin. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
