Box Score 2 Bridgewater, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team ran its Old Dominion Athletic Conference winning streak to seven games Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Bridgewater. The Hornets won both games by 4-2 scores, the first victory coming in eight innings.
Gracie Dooley went 4-for-6 on the day for Lynchburg, while Bri Hodges continued to swing a hot bat, collecting two hits and driving in four Hornet runs.
In the opener, Lynchburg found itself in an early hole after the Eagles scored single runs in both the first and second innings. The Hornets tied the ballgame in the top of the third, however, on RBI singles by Lexi Powell and Hodges.
After that, Hornets senior Kayley Cox dazzled. The right-hander allowed just two hits to the Bridgewater lineup in the final six innings and held the Eagles off the board for the rest of the ballgame.
Lynchburg struggled to score as well until the eighth, when Olivia Herman smacked a two-out double that scored Kayla Hugate. Herman came around to score on an Eagles error to make it a 4-2 Lynchburg lead, and Cox induced a trio of groundouts to polish off her third complete game of 2021.
The Hornets also fell behind in the nightcap as BC scored a run in the second, but Hodges delivered a three-run triple in the third to put the visitors ahead for good. Lynchburg added another run in the fifth on an Ashley Hailey RBI groundout, and freshman Emily Charlton was steady in the circle, allowing just two runs on eight hits and striking out three in the complete-game victory.
Lynchburg (16-10, 7-1 ODAC) will take a break from conference play as fifth-ranked Salisbury pays a visit to the Hill City for a noon doubleheader.
