Box Score 2 Emory, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball took both games of its doubleheader with Emory & Henry College Sunday afternoon by final scores of 18-2 in Game 1 and 13-6 in Game 2. With the doubleheader sweep, the Hornets have run their win streak to nine in a row.
Three Hornets had three or more RBIs on the afternoon as Jackson Harding and Cameron Lane each drove in three and Avery Neaves brought in four, with three coming from a three-run home run in the fourth inning.
Lynchburg (19-8, 10-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) took an early lead in the third inning as Garrett Jackson homered to left to put the Hornets up 1-0. The very next inning, Jackson and Kinston Carson each drove in a run and then Neaves parked one over the left field fence to put Lynchburg up 6-0.
The Wasps (4-10, 3-10) scored a lone run in the bottom of the fifth off of a Hornets' error, but Lynchburg scored one more in the sixth and then four more in the seventh on RBIs from Harding and Neaves and a two-run single from Josh Gjormand.
Lynchburg capped off Game 1 with seven runs in the top of the ninth with five coming from Harding and Cameron Lane. Harding doubled down the left field line to bring home two and then two batters later, Cameron Lane smashed a pinch-hit, bases clearing triple to right field, cementing the Game 1 win.
Graduate student Kinston Carson threw seven quality innings for the Hornets as he allowed two runs, both unearned, on eight hits and punched out six to earn his first win of the season. The Wasps' Noah Griffin took the loss for Emory & Henry.
Lynchburg played in the same fashion in Game 2 as they did in Game 1. After going down 2-0 in the top of the fifth on an E&H two-run home run from Koty Proctor, Lynchburg responded with 13 runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Freshman Gavin Collins and junior Chris Martin each doubled home a pair in the fifth in what was a seven run inning for the Hornets. In the sixth, Lynchburg scored three more on a sacrifice fly from Avery Combs and then an RBI-single from both Martin and PJ Alvanos. Martin's bat stayed hot in the seventh as he drove in his fourth run of the afternoon for Lynchburg's 13th unanswered run.
In the home half of the eighth, E&H made things interesting as the Wasps took advantage of a few Hornets miscues and scored four runs on three hits to cut the Lynchburg lead to 13-6. The Hornets' Grayson Thurman came on in relief in the ninth and shut down any form of an E&H comeback as the senior punched out three to seal the Lynchburg sweep.
Hornets' starter Brandon Pond allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out five in his seven innings of work to earn his fourth win of the campaign.
Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 13 as the Hornets play host to the No.12-ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
