Box Score Cary, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg and William Peace combined for 34 runs and 28 hits on Tuesday night as the Hornets came out on top 18-16 on the road to win their 11th consecutive game.
In the top of the first, Lynchburg's leadoff hitter, junior Cameron Lane, was hit by the first Pacers pitch of the game. After Garrett Jackson and Kinston Carson each drew walks to load the bases, sophomore Avery Neaves doubled home two runs to start Lynchburg's eight-run first inning.
The Hornets (21-8) batted around in the top of the first as Lynchburg scored eight times on just two hits -- Neaves' two-run double and an RBI-single from Jackson -- as nine Hornets reached base in the inning. After Lynchburg pitching set down the Pacers in order in the bottom half, the Hornets tacked on one more in the top of the second to go ahead 9-0.
In the home half of the second, the Pacers (15-13) responded with seven runs on six hits to cut the Hornets' lead to 9-7. The very next inning, Lynchburg tacked on five more runs taking a 14-7 lead as Carson drove home a run and Neaves and Gavin Collins each drove in two with extra-base hits.
The Pacers outscored the Hornets 9-1 over the next four innings and eventually took a 16-15 lead after the seventh inning. In the top of the eighth, Lynchburg scored twice more on a sacrifice-fly from Jackson which tied the game and then Ryan Long scored on a William Peace miscue to give the Hornets a one-run lead. In the top of the ninth, Lynchburg added an insurance run on an infield hit from Long to put the Hornets up 18-16.
Sophomores Angel Collazo and Colby Hutnan combined to allow just two hits as the pair held the Pacers offense scoreless over the final two frames of the contest. Hutnan earned his first-career win in the effort.
Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond on Saturday, April 17 as the Hornets travel to No. 18 Shenandoah University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
