Box Score 2 Winchester, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball lost both games of its doubleheader with No.18-ranked Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon by final scores of 2-0 in Game 1 and 4-3 in Game 2.
In Game 1, Lynchburg fell behind early as Shenandoah took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single. In the third, SU tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 advantage. Shenandoah's first and third inning runs were the only two runs allowed.
Starters Kinston Carson for Lynchburg and Tad Dean for Shenandoah dueled it out for the entire contest as both pitchers threw complete games. Carson allowed just the two runs, one earned, on seven hits. He punched out five and did not walk a batter. SU's Tad Dean allowed nine Lynchburg hits, but none came around to score. Lynchburg's Avery Neaves had the only extra-base hit of the contest.
Carson was dealt the loss and Dean earned the win for Shenandoah.
Game 2 was played to the same fashion, except it was Lynchburg that got on the board first. In the fourth, freshman Gavin Collins singled home Avery Neaves to give Lynchburg a 1-0 edge.
In the top of the seventh, Carson drove home two with a triple to a right field that scored Garrett Jackson and Chris Martin, putting Lynchburg up 3-0.
Lynchburg's Game 2 starter, Brandon Pond, threw seven strong innings on the afternoon, but pitched into trouble in the eighth as SU figured out the right-hander who exited the game with the bases loaded and only out. Lynchburg's bullpen surrendered a bases-clearing triple to Colby Martin to tie the game at 3-3 before SU ultimately took a 4-3 lead on a sacrifice fly.
Pond went 7 ⅓ innings, as the junior allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven, but earned a no decision.
Lynchburg baseball will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 18 with a make-up game against Eastern Mennonite on Fox Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
