Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team dropped a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference games to top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan, 12-3 and 11-5, Sunday on Moon Field.
It was Lynchburg's first consecutive losses since April 2, a span of 12 games in which the Hornets won 10.
The visiting Marlins rapped out 25 hits on the day, though, and had Hornet pitching figured out all day long. VWU took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 and led 5-0 after the top of the third. Lynchburg got a run across in the bottom half thanks to a Kayla Hugate RBI single, but Virginia Wesleyan scored in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.
Hornets first baseman Sophie Tully provided a highlight with her first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning.
In the nightcap, VWU again jumped ahead with a run in the top of the first. The Marlins led 2-0 after another run in the third, but Lynchburg again countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third, this time on Hugate's RBI fielder's choice.
With the Marlins leading 7-2 in the fifth, sophomore Caroline Joy slugged her second homer of the season, and Tully smacked a single that wound up in two more Lynchburg runs, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
The Marlins responded with four runs in the sixth, though, for breathing room and came away with the sweep.
Prior to the games, the program celebrated Senior Day with its six members of the Class of 2021 -- Shea Alheit, Kayley Cox, Kristen Harkins, Hugate, Michelle Lehan, and Cassie Powell.
The Hornets (21-13, 11-3 ODAC) won't have long to wait for a chance to get back in the win column. Lynchburg travels to rival Roanoke Monday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
