Softball slugs way to sweep of Guilford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- The bats came alive for University of Lynchburg's softball team in the Hornets' doubleheader sweep over visiting Guilford, 8-7 and 12-2, Wednesday on Moon Field.

Lynchburg rapped out 21 hits in the doubleheader, making use of a couple big innings to pick up two more key Old Dominion Athletic Conference victories.

The Hornets started the scoring early with a run in the first inning when freshman Lexi Powell doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on a wild pitch. Lynchburg then scored six times in the second, taking advantage of three Quakers errors in the inning to the tune of a 7-0 lead.

Guilford closed the gap to 7-4 in the third and 8-6 in the fourth on a Casey Bunting home run, but freshman Emily Charlton allowed just two hits and an unearned run over the last three innings for her third save of the season.

Powell went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, and freshman Kaleigh Hackett added a pair of hits in the opener for the Hornets.

Lynchburg put the nightcap out of reach early, tattooing GC pitching for eight runs in the bottom of the first innings and four more in the second. Sophomore Gracie Dooley and graduate student Kayla Hugate each knocked two-RBI hits in the first, and sophomore Sophie Tully and Powell both did the same in the second.

Sophomore Angela Sperandeo went four strong innings, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs to earn her first win of the 2021 season in the circle.

Lynchburg (25-13, 15-3 ODAC) will close out the regular season Saturday with a trip to No. 9 Emory & Henry. The Hornets can earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament with a sweep.
