Emory, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team dropped its final two ballgames of the 2021 regular season, 8-5 and 7-2, Sunday on the road at No. 9-ranked Emory & Henry.

Graduate student shortstop Kayla Hugate reached base seven times on three base hits and four walks in the doubleheader, and sophomore third baseman Karle Cundiff and freshman left fielder Kaleigh Hackett each drove in a pair of runs for the Hornets.

Lynchburg took an early lead in the opener thanks to Hackett's two-run single in the first, but E&H rallied for three runs in the third to take the lead, and the Wasps' Kyndall Hiatt homered to make it 5-2 in the hosts' favor in the fourth.

The Hornets rallied to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth, but E&H responded with three runs in the sixth to retake the lead, and the hosts held on for the win.

In Game 2, the Wasps took an early lead with a second-inning sacrifice fly and made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice.

Cundiff tied the game with a two-run double in the fifth, but the Wasps clubbed three late home runs to break the ballgame open and complete the sweep.

Lynchburg (25-15, 15-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) will carry the No. 3 seed into the upcoming ODAC tournament and will play host to the quarterfinals next weekend. Tournament pairings and details on dates and times for the upcoming games will be announced this week.
