Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team swept Guilford College at home in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon as the Hornets took Game 1, 20-3, and Game 2, 8-1.
In Game 1, the Hornets (25-11, 15-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame after a double steal scored Garrett Jackson and put Avery Neaves on second base with two outs. Avery Combs then promptly drove home Neaves with an RBI-single for Lynchburg's second run.
Lynchburg struck again in the second inning on a Cameron Lane two-run double to left center to take a 4-0 lead. Then in the third the Hornets extended the lead to six on a two-run double from Holden Fiedler that plated Combs and Gavin Collins. Two innings later, Fiedler drove in his third run with an RBI-single to right.
The Quakers (2-14, 2-14) scored single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, but in the bottom of the eighth, the Lynchburg offense exploded for 13 runs on eight hits. Collins and Jackson highlighted the inning for the Hornets as Collins drove in two with a single through the left side and Jackson brought in three on a double to left center.
Lynchburg starter, Kinston Carson, tossed seven strong innings as the grad student allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out eight en route to his second win of the year. Guilford's Jackson Marcellus went 4 2⁄3 in a losing effort.
In Game 2, it was much of the same for Lynchburg as the Hornets scored a lone run in the bottom of the first on an RBI-double from Neaves to plate Jackson. In the third, Lane doubled home Ryan Long then two batters later, Carson drove home Lane with a sacrifice fly to center to put Lynchburg up 3-0.
In the fifth, the Hornets tacked on two more on a two-run single from PJ Alvanos to take a 5-0 advantage. Lynchburg went on to score one in the sixth and two in the eighth to take an 8-1 lead and ultimately seal the doubleheader sweep.
Game 2 starter Brandon Pond dazzled over seven innings of work as the junior allowed a lone Guilford run on just five singles, and punched out 10. Senior Grayson Thurman came on in relief and threw two hitless innings and struck out three.
Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 28 as the Hornets travel to Hampden-Sydney College to take on the Tigers in a mid-week ODAC matchup. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
