Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball swept both games of its doubleheader against Ferrum College, 10-7 in Game 1, and 15-5 in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Hornets (14-8, 7-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) fell behind early as the Panthers scored four runs in the top half of the third. Lynchburg responded in the home half with five runs and took a 5-4 lead as the Hornets banged out six hits. Junior Garrett Jackson and freshman Gavin Collins highlighted the inning as both sent RBI-triples to right field.
The Panthers (4-13, 2-7) took their second lead of the game in the fourth as Ferrum scored two more runs to go ahead 6-5. Lynchburg tied the game once again in its half of the fourth on a Dylan Fisher sacrifice-fly that scored Holden Fiedler.
The Hornets scored a run in the seventh on a double from Avery Combs that brought Kinston Carson around to score, putting the Hornets up 7-6. In the bottom of the eighth, Lynchburg added to its lead with three more on a Carson sacrifice-fly and an Avery Neaves two-run double to go ahead 10-6.
Carson got the start for the Hornets as the graduate student went 3 ⅓ and allowed five runs, none earned, on five hits and five strikeouts. Zack Potts earned the win in relief as the sophomore threw the final 5 ⅔ innings allowing two runs on six hits with seven punchouts.
In Game 2, Lynchburg fell behind early again as the top of the Ferrum lineup jumped on Hornets' starter, Brandon Pond, right away. Rufus Hurdle led off the game with a single through the left side, stole second and then came around to score on a Josh Greenway single.
The Hornets responded with 11 combined runs in the third and fourth innings as Neaves and senior Avery Combs each drove home a pair in the third and Jackson Harding added another on an RBI-single. In the fourth, six straight Hornets reached base and came around to score in the inning. Carson singled, Neaves tripled and Combs singled in three straight at-bats, all driving in a run and putting the Hornets up 11-1.
For the fifth straight game, Lynchburg scored in the home half of the eighth as the Hornets scored four runs on three hits, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jackson, his sixth of the year.
Pond settled down after he allowed the first inning run, going seven innings and allowing four runs, three of them earned, on five hits and punched out six to earn his third win of the year. Brendan Houghtaling came on in relief and struck out three in the eighth and Grayson Thurman retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the doubleheader sweep.
Lynchburg baseball will be back in on the diamond on Tuesday, April 6 as the Hornets take on the Greensboro College Pride in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
