Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of crosstown rival Randolph Tuesday afternoon, winning 9-4 and 8-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference double dip.
Freshman right fielder Bri Hodges and junior catcher Olivia Herman led the way for the Hornet offense, each with three hits on the day. Hodges drove in three runs and scored twice, while Herman crossed the plate three times in addition to one RBI. Sophomore first baseman Sophie Tully also drove in three runs on the day.
Meanwhile, freshman Emily Charlton and senior Kayley Cox dazzled in the circle. Charlton earned the win in the opener, entering with two out in the top of the first inning and going the rest of the way, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Cox was dominant in the nightcap, twirling four shutout innings and allowing just two baserunners for her fourth win of the campaign.
Randolph took an early lead in Game 1 on Paige Naples three-run double in the first inning, but Charlton entered and righted the ship to escape without further damage.
Lynchburg was hitless until the fourth against WildCats lefty Braelyn Cooper, but the Hornets changed that in a hurry. Kayla Hugate led off the inning with a double and then scored on Hodges' RBI single. After a WildCats error allowed another run to cross, Tully put Lynchburg in the lead with a two-run single that chased Cooper from the ballgame.
The Hornets added two more runs in the frame on an RBI fielder's choice by Gracie Dooley and Lexi Powell's run-scoring single.
Randolph took advantage of a passed ball to score in the fifth, but Powell's strike from the outfield cut down another runner attempting to score and ended the threat.
Lynchburg then added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to win, 9-4.
The Hornets didn't take as long to get going in the nightcap, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on Hodges' first-inning RBI single. Lynchburg scored three more in the second thanks to Tully's RBI fielder's choice and a two-run triple off the bat of Hugate. The Hornets poured it on with another run in the third and three more in the fourth as Cox mowed through the WildCats lineup.
Right-hander Cassie Powell came in to pitch for the fifth inning and found herself in trouble due to a couple miscues, but the senior escaped the jam with two strikeouts and a groundout to seal Lynchburg's second shutout of the year.
The Hornets have now taken 11 of the last 13 meetings with their crosstown foes and four straight from the WildCats.
Lynchburg (13-9, 5-1 ODAC) will take a break from conference play Thursday when Mary Washington visits the Hill City for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
