Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team outlasted Virginia Wesleyan, 11-7 in 12 innings, Wednesday afternoon on the road, stretching its unbeaten streak to seven in a row.
The Hornets (17-8, 8-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) got out to a slow start as Virginia Wesleyan scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Lynchurg scored a lone run in the top of the third after a Marlins' wild pitch allowed Ryan Long to cross the plate without the aid of a hit.
The Lynchburg offense was held hitless until the fourth inning when freshman Gavin Collins doubled to right center. In the fifth, Lynchburg scored two runs on three hits as Kinston Carson and Avery Neaves each drove home a run with RBI-singles to cut the Marlins' lead to just 5-3.
In the sixth, the Hornets tacked on two more with RBI from PJ Alvanos and Holden Fiedler to tie the game at 5-5. In the bottom half, the Marlins (3-15, 3-8) responded with two of their own to take another two-run lead after a Hornets' error and an RBI single from Miles Christian. Lynchburg tied the game again with two runs in the seventh as Avery Combs singled to drive home Carson, then two batters later, Alvanos singled home pinch runner Ty Gravett to knot the contest at 7-7.
In the 12th, Lynchburg scored four unanswered runs as Collins led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. One batter later, Alvanos doubled to center to bring home Collins for his third RBI of the afternoon. After a Chris Martin single, Long doubled to left center to plate Alvanos, and after two sacrifice flies, Lynchburg took an 11-7 lead.
Senior Grayson Thurman came on in relief in the sixth inning as the Lynch Station native threw 5 2⁄3 scoreless innings out of the Lynchburg bullpen. Thurman only allowed one hit and three walks as he punched out eight to earn his second win of the season. Fellow senior Santiago Meneses threw a scoreless bottom of the 12th to earn his second save in as many games.
Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond on Saturday, April 10 as the Hornets travel to Emory & Henry College for an ODAC doubleheader with the rival Wasps. First pitch is set for noon.
