Softball splits doubleheader with Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Mary Washington Thursday on Moon Field, winning 11-4 in the opener before falling, 4-1, in Game 2.

The Hornets brought their bats to Game 1, rapping 15 hits in the game. Lynchburg's No. 2 through No. 5 hitters in the order went 11-for-15 in the ballgame with eight RBI between them, highlighted by freshman right fielder Bri Hodges, who went 4-for-4 with five RBI on her own.

With the game tied, 3-3, headed into the bottom of the third, sophomore catcher Caroline Joy put the Hornets ahead with a run-scoring single. An inning later, sophomore third baseman Karle Cundiff and Hodges delivered RBI hits to put Lynchburg ahead 6-3.

The Hornets broke the game open with a five-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run single again off Hodges' bat.

Freshman Hailey Farlow earned the win for the Hornets, allowing three runs in four innings and striking out five, and senior Cassie Powell tossed three innings of one-run ball to earn her first-career save.

Graduate student shortstop Kayla Hugate went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the game. Cundiff and junior designated player Olivia Herman each had two hits and an RBI.

Mary Washington found the answer for the Lynchburg offense in the form of Hadlea Valera. The Eagles' right-hander twirled a complete-game five-hitter, allowing just one run in the UMW win.

Hitless through three innings, the Lynchburg offense woke up in the fourth. Cundiff led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single by freshman left fielder Kaleigh Hackett. Lynchburg loaded the bases with one out in the inning but couldn't cut the deficit any closer than 3-1.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Joy rapped a one-out, pinch-hit double to mount a Lynchburg threat, but Mary Washington escaped with the victory.

The Hornets (14-10) will set their sights back on Old Dominion Athletic Conference play this weekend with a Saturday trip to Bridgewater.
