Softball sweeps Guilford to move into ODAC semifinals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team put it all together for a doubleheader sweep of visiting Guilford, 4-1 and 6-0, to advance through the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal round Saturday on Moon Field.

The Hornets got two spectacular pitching performances on the day -- a complete-game five hitter without an earned run from freshman Emily Charlton in the opener, and a four-hit shutout from sophomore Angela Sperandeo in Game 2. Lexi Powell and Karle Cundiff each had three hits on the day to lead the Lynchburg offense.

Lynchburg found itself in an early hole in Game 1 as Guilford took advantage of a Charlton error on the opening play of the ballgame and an Ally Morales single to lead 1-0 in the top of the first.

The Hornets got the run right back in the bottom half, though, on a rally started by a Quakers miscue and finished by Bri Hodges' RBI single.

Both Charlton and Guilford pitcher Katie McNeill were great through the next four innings, but Lynchburg's offense woke up in the bottom of the sixth, lighting the fire with three straight bunts that put pressure on the Quaker defense. Ashley Hailey's bunt single got things going, followed by another one from Powell and a third by Kayla Hugate that forced a GC error and allowed the go-ahead run to score. Cundiff later added a run with an RBI single, and Hodges delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 Lynchburg.

Charlton pitched around a leadoff single in the seventh thanks to a fine double play by Hailey as Lynchburg nailed down the win.

Sperandeo was phenomenal in the nightcap for the Hornets, twirling her first-career shutout. The righty allowed a one-out single in the top of the first but settled in to retire the next nine in order. GC had just two hits entering the seventh, but the Quakers threatened with runners on first and third with two out in the final inning. Sperandeo induced a game-ending groundout for her first-career postseason win.

Lynchburg's offense got going early with four runs in the first, the big blow a two-run double by Hodges. Gracie Dooley made it a 5-0 Lynchburg lead in the fourth with an RBI single, and Kaleigh Hackett did the same an inning later for a 6-0 advantage.

The Hornets will play the winner of the upcoming Emory & Henry versus Ferrum series in the ODAC semifinal round later this week. The Wasps and Panthers will start that best-of-three set Sunday.
